About Anamnesis

Anamnesis creates transformative performances that evoke remembrance and explore timeless human quests.

What is Anamnesis?

The interdisciplinary project Anamnesis was started in 2018 by Greek director and choreographer Apostolia Papadamaki. Anamnesis following has since created innovative performances in emblematic archeological sites and museums supported by public and private bodies.

Merging contemporary performance and Ancient Mysticism to create site-specific, participatory, and immersive productions, Anamnesis aims to activate remembrance of the quests of the soul,  awakening a profound sense of connection to our shared heritage and one another.

  • The original performances of Anamnesis received unanimous approval from the Central Archaeological Council of Greece and in cooperation with the Ephorate of Antiquities of every site.

Anamnesis performances have been specially designed for the Archaeological Site of Delphi,  the Sanctuary of Cabeiri in Lemnos,  the archaeological site of Delos,  Cape Sounion / Temple of Poseidon, the Temple of Epicurious Apollo,  Ancient Zone, and at the Minoan Palace of Zakros, produced by Quasi Stellar NGO.

Anamnesis has also created site specific performances for the Archeological Museum of Thessaloniki and the Museo Castromediano Lecce in Italy.

Our Vision

Anamnesis envisions enriching connections between individuals, their ancestors, and their deeper selves through dynamic performance art in archeological sites, museums, and sacred spaces. Each event is a collaborative, immersive experience, blending performance with ancient wisdom, cultural heritage, and scientific insights to enhance awareness of human existence and challenge our views on human origins and cosmic roles.

The project's ethos, encapsulated by the motto "Remembering Our Ancient Future," draws on the Platonic theory of Remembrance, suggesting that humans possess innate, celestial knowledge accessible through memory and represented in traditional expressions like dance and song.

  • Central to Anamnesis is its engagement with key Greek archaeological sites, deepening cultural understanding and fostering spiritual connections that surpass mere intellectual interaction. These performances resonate deeply, aided by scientific concepts like mirror neurons, which create a profound empathetic link between performers and viewers.

Impact & Synergies

More than an artistic venture, Anamnesis invites individuals to activate their innate empathy and explore humanity's rich tapestry through the powerful lens of performative art, creating a mystical, timeless experience in both ancient and modern contexts.

Strategic partnerships with various organizations and academic bodies enrich the project, aiming to illuminate the Greek spirit globally and ensure cultural sustainability by passing knowledge to the next generation of artists and directors.

Empowering the local communities and the broader region is one of the primary objectives of  Anamnesis. These performances are designed to involve spectators and artists, residents, adults, and children who participate voluntarily. We aim to engage local volunteers from various age and social groups, offering them the chance to interact and collaborate with recognized artists across different art forms.

This initiative aims to bolster the local economy, reinforce local pride, improve accessibility, promote volunteerism, and encourage the involvement of citizens in its execution.
